Bring your passion for landscape painting to new heights in this guided, open studio, all media class. Using your own reference materials, learn how to identify and convey the essence of your landscape subjects— respond by interpreting vs. copying. Develop more intuitive, spontaneous ways of seeing. Paint with greater emotion and purpose. Additional topics include composition and design, color exploration, qualities of light and shadow, value contrasts, edge control, aerial perspective. Maximum 10 students, familiar with their chosen medium.

In this class you will work on your own projects under the guidance of an instructor knowledgeable in classical realism. There will be demonstrations and lots of individual help. You will learn how to draw and paint more beautiful portraits, flowers, landscapes, or any subject matter you choose. You will be working mostly from your own photo references but you also have the option of working from a still life set up which is fundamental in training the eye to see objects in space. We will focus on drawing, composition, tonal values, color and edge control.

This class focuses on the methods, rules and materials specific to miniature painting. It is an age old technique which began in the 15th century. You will learn how to work on a surface called ivorine which is a surface made only in England which has the translucent qualities of ivory. The instructor is an international award winning miniaturist who will show you how to create beautiful jewel-like little paintings. A materials fee of $15.00 to be paid directly to the instructor to cover the ivorine.

In this intermediate class you will explore several different approaches to perfecting your painting skills in portraiture using pastel, charcoal or oils. You'll learn Classical Realism principles to paint form and tonal values using plaster head casts as they do in the Ateliers or you can work from photographs. Students may also opt to learn how to set up a still-life and learn classical painting methods, such as tonal values, edges, and accurate drawing.

In this class, you will learn the fundamental principles of portrait painting from life using direct painting methods. We will concentrate on proper proportion, values, skin tones, and getting a likeness. The instructor will give step by step demonstrations and lots of individual instruction from how to begin the initial drawing through mixing beautiful skin tones and atmospheric backgrounds. We will have two models for three weeks each.
