Do you know with paper clay you can: Join two pieces of bone dry paper clay to each other without a problem? Scoring is not necessary? 98% of repairs made with paper clay survive firing! Bone dry paper clay is STRONG! Rapid force drying is A-OK! And lots more… You will learn how to make paper clay from scratch and then explore all the wonderful ways it can be used to make lighter, thinner and more flexible pieces. We will dip textures in paper clay slip, drape paper-thin clay over balloons and construct vessels that would be far too difficult with regular clay! This course will cover several techniques for decorating pottery. We will cover modern day Majolica, stenciling, painting with underglazes, wax resist, bubble painting, masking, slip trailing, sgraffito, flicking, sponging, using oxides for antiquing, and others. Students will make slab tiles and bowls out of slump molds to practice the techniques. Handouts will be provided that they can use for practice. These designs will cover circle-based, straight-line, square, dot and ball combinations as well as floral and leaf motifs. We will also touch on how to make stencils with the Cricut machine for use on pottery. Pottery beginners are welcome. The hand building done in class is very basic. Class will learn the techniques on tiles and slump and hump molds. More advanced students can bring in their wheel pieces if they so desire. For painting, all levels welcome but a general knowledge of painting and brush work is ideal. Ages 17 and up.

This class is open to intermediate and advanced students who want to explore forms of their choice. I encourage you to bring photos or sketches of forms you wish to explore and we can go from there. Weeks 1 through 4 will be dedicated to throwing, trimming, and preparing your pieces for the glaze night, which will be on week 5. The glazes we will use in this class will be crystalline glazes. We will discuss methods of glaze application and preparing your bisque pieces for the crystalline glaze firing, we will also go over firing schedules and what happens during the firing at the various temperatures we use to grow the crystals. Week 5 will be dedicated to glazing and loading the kiln. Week 6 will be dedicated to removing the crystalline pieces from their risers and finishing the bottoms with diamond grinding discs. This session will conclude with a critique and discussion session reviewing glaze results – what worked well and what we should avoid in the future.

Wheel-Thrown Miniature Porcelain Forms with Crystalline Glaze
From throwing to glazing, Tanner will take you through his unique methods of creating
small-scale forms out of porcelain. He will be showing every stage of several different types of forms, discussing design and challenges, and showing which tools work best for intricate work. This two day workshop will begin with all attendees glazing one of their own pieces, utilizing some of Tanner’s glazing strategies when it comes to using both crystal and non-crystal glazes on the same piece. Tanner will then demonstrate throwing various small-scale forms off the hump, showing how to think about glazing effectiveness even at these early stages.
