Join us at DFAC for a live painting demonstration as professional artists Gakushu Tanaka (Fukuoka, Japan) and Nathan Beard (St. Petersburg, FL) wow crowds with their individual, unique painting styles and techniques.
In his work, Nathan uses a variety of processes to achieve undulating, linear patterns in acrylic paint that speak to the way humans experience change and transformation. Gakushu’s style is known in Japan as avant-garde, a modernized form of traditional Japanese calligraphy. His recent work is focused on the present age of rapidly advancing technology which can unify people and society. During this live event, in addition to showcasing their individual processes, Nathan and Ganukushu will be merging their two styles and creating a painting together.
Don’t miss the chance to experience this rare event!

BIOGRAPHIES
Gakushu Tanaka was born in 1990. He is based in Fukuoka, Japan. His parents sent him to calligraphy class at age seven, in spite of the fact he was born left-handed (Japanese calligraphy is generally practiced with the right hand). While in his teens, Mr. Tanaka studied traditional Japanese calligraphy. At age twenty, he encountered avant-garde calligraphy; it’s free-style impacted him greatly. While Mr. Tanaka continues to work within the traditions of Japanese calligraphy, he is releasing new work as an avant-garde calligraphy artist. The theme of recent work is a focus on the present age: rapidly advancing technology unifying people and society.
St. Petersburg-based artist Nathan Beard employs a variety of processes to achieve complex, multi-layered paintings, drawings and collages inspired by the human conception and experience of Space-Time. He draws influence from the density and variety of Floridian flora, as well as chaos theory and fractal geometry. The Colorado State University graduate (BFA 2001) has exhibited extensively in the region, including Tampa Museum of Art, Gallery 221, Highlands Museum of the Arts, Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, Olivet Nazarene University, and Brooker Creek Preserve. Nathan also serves as Assistant Curator at Dunedin Fine Art Center.
