PR104 Reduction Linocut Printmaking with Holly Bird

Introduction and continuing practice in reduction linocut printmaking. Reduction allows for wonderful carved textures, painterly effects and experimentation in relief printmaking. This is not a beginner’s class: students must have some previous basic printmaking experience and drawing ability. Using a single block of unmounted linoleum and working with oil-based inks, we’ll explore advanced reduction for those who want to take their relief printmaking experience further. In-depth instruction in pin & tab registration techniques, using an etching press and methods and materials, with an emphasis on design and pre-planning will be offered in this class. Ages 17 and up.

PR504 Intaglio – Etching With Holly Bird
Wednesdays, 6 Week Class

Introduction to basic and safe methods of etching with anon-acid solution (ferric chloride) using copper plates. Printmaking experience is not necessary but having taken a drawing class or have some basic drawing ability is required. Those with etching experience can move their work to the next level. The use of a large and small etching press, spray-paint aquatint and other methods will be covered. Ages 17 and up.
We use traditional, oil-based inks with Universal Hard Ground and liquid soft ground. You may bring in any ground or inks you prefer to use. For those with a sensitivity, most of our cleanup is done with vegetable oil and Simple Green along with minimal amounts of odorless mineral spirits while using a sawdust box. Denatured alcohol (to clean off rosin) and acetone (to clean off spray paint) are in use, but outdoors next to the classroom Nitrile gloves and rosin masks are provided.

PR301 Intaglio Etching Open Studio With Holly Bird

Intaglio Etching Open Studio is an opportunity for currently enrolled, intermediate+ DFAC etching students to work on their projects. Currently enrolled students have priority. With the permission of etching instructor Holly Bird, other previously enrolled or independent etching printmakers may attend this studio session IF spaces are available and must contact her first. Work may not be intended for production. Two presses are available. You are encouraged to supply your own paper, but student paper will be available. Black and brown ink provided. To attend the Intaglio Etching Open Studio, students must purchase a Punch Card for $65. for members; $95. non-members and pay a $10 lab fee per six-week session. Each punch card is good for 18 individual 1-hour sessions. Punch Cards must be presented to the Studio Monitor (TBD) at each session attended. To attend the Relief Printmaking Open Studio, students must purchase a Punch Card for $65. for members; $95. non-members and pay a $15. ink and paper lab fee at the beginning of the six-week session to DFAC. PR505 Advanced and Professional Intaglio Etching with Holly Bird

Exploration of traditional, safe methods of etching with anon-acid solution (ferric chloride) using copper plates. This Friday session is for students with considerable etching experience who may expand on more advanced techniques or try mezzotints (Please contact instructor in advance to order plates.) The studio is equipped with both a large 36” and smaller 19” press along with a rosin box and spray paint area for aquatints. This is a traditional oil based ink class.
