Young Twins Set to Help Dunedin Dolphins Become Part of the Dolphin Trail
When the Dunedin Fine Art Center (DFAC) was asked to oversee the call for artists for the newest additions to the Dolphin Trail, little did they realize that they would be working with such a diverse group of artists, the youngest of whom are 9 year twins!
DFAC ‘s youth programs have a stellar reputation. This year alone, they will host over 1700 young artists during their Summer Art Academy. Even with those kind of numbers and that kind of talent, calls for commissions are usually left to more seasoned artists. That’s why it was surprising that among the over 1 dozen proposals submitted for the 3 dolphins funded by the Advantus Leisure Management Services, there were proposals from Addison & Ella Engle, twin 9 year-old artists.
“I was thrilled” admitted Ken Hannon, who handled the call for DFAC. “It takes a lot of courage for nine year olds to jump into a commission like this” he added, “with the strength of DFAC’s youth programs, we thought it appropriate to offer them one of the commissions,” he concluded.
DFAC has paired the young twins with a more seasoned partner in artist Christine Renc-Carter to see them through some of the technical challenges that a project like this presents. For her part, Ms. Renc-Carter said she is enjoying working with the girls to hone and implement the design.
The design, which takes the history of Dunedin and the Orange Belt Railway as its starting point, promises to be a colorful interpretation of the area.
The other two commissions went to area artists Demeree Barth and M’rissa Rosenthal. Their designs will focus more on Dunedin’s natural beauty. The completed dolphins will be installed by the City of Dunedin, the third partner in this Dunedin Dolphin Trail project and will extend the Dolphin Trail into beautiful Dunedin.
