Every work of art creates a relationship between the person who made it and the people who encounter it. What happens in that space?
Following a recent act of defacement in Jason Lazarus’ exhibition underseers, the Dunedin Fine Art Center is responding through conversation. Rather than simply restoring the artwork and moving forward, DFAC, in collaboration with the artist, is using this moment as an opportunity to explore the relationship between artists, artworks, and audiences through Seen / Heard, a new community conversation series focused on interpretation, perspective, and respectful dialogue.
Moderated by Olda, the panel features artist Jason Lazarus and Dr. Nashid Madyun, Executive Director at Florida Humanities. The discussion will explore the relationship between artists and audiences, including questions about artistic intent, interpretation, context, and how disagreement can become dialogue rather than dismissal.
Inspired by the themes of underseers, this conversation examines how contemporary art can create space for multiple perspectives while still honoring artistic intent.
Visitors are encouraged to experience underseers before or after the discussion and participate in the interactive exhibition component by sharing their own thoughts and perspectives as part of the ongoing conversation.
Admission is free, but registration is encouraged.
