W-AT214 Gustave Courbet: Realism and the Origins of Modernism with Dee Kilgo
February 25 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
All levels welcome!
French artist Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) didn’t just paint pictures — he picked fights with tradition and changed the course of art. Dee’s lecture explores how Courbet, taunted as “the artist-apostle of ugliness,” became the leader of the Realist art movement in the 1850s. You’ll meet Courbet the provocateur: outspoken, arrogant, and fond of scandal, whose paintings sparked outrage and heated debate. His images that were once hidden for their blatant eroticism are still shocking today.
