DR401 Basic Drawing With Melissa Miller Nece

Beginner, Intermediate
Learn to draw anything by learning to see as an artist sees, with emphasis on the perception of contour, negative space, proportion and value. Excellent foundation for beginners, also sharpens experienced drawing skills. Improving your drawing skills is invaluable in all of your other creative pursuits. Based on “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards, this class develops your perceptual skills.
Ages 17 and up.

Supply List:
Sketch book, 9 x 12″ or 11 x 14″, preferably spiral bound (or a generous supply of white bond paper, 8 1/2 x 11″, with storage envelope)
2-3 Graphite Pencils
(Most useful are HB, 2B, 4B; you may also want H, 2H and 6B- notcharcoal). Sets in tins are nice, but not necessary. If nothing else, bring a couple of #2’s.
Graphite stick,” #2 or 4B, Available at most art supply stores; they will be available to share in class
Two erasers
Kneaded eraser (Gray putty type) & a standard “Pink Pearl” or white vinyl eraser
Text- Optional, but worth having: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards (There are multiple editions; we use the 2012 4th edition.)
A piece of clear plastic (plexiglas) or glass, 8 x 10″, 1/8″ thick.
(Home center stores have pre-cut plexi for minimal cost – check where they cut glass. You may use the glass from a cheap 8 x 10″ picture frame. If glass, tape the edges.)
Use a permanent marker (Sharpie) to draw two crosshairs on the plastic, a horizontal line and a vertical line crossing at the center of the plane.
Two black “viewfinders,” 8 x 10″
(Use construction paper, poster board, or other board, cut to match your glass/plexi.)
First draw diagonal lines from the corners to find the center as shown. From one, cut a rectangular opening of 4¼” x 5¼” and from the other; cut out a larger opening of 6 x 7 5/8″.) See the image.
You may also want to cut a third smaller window, any size, so long as its corners are also on the diagonal lines. Black paper for the windows will be available in class.
A wipe-off black felt-tip marker (watersoluble, like Vis-à-Vis, sold in stores with school supplies)
One or two metal clips to fasten your viewfinders to the plastic picture plane
Optional:
Pencil Sharpener (If you want a battery-operated portable, choose one with a “helical”(spiral) cutter.
If you have trouble finding the supplies, many of these things will be available for use in class.
