Students in this workshop will learn the essential principles of broad edge calligraphy used to write in classic hands such as Roman and Italic. We will start with basic strokes and move on to a full set of minuscules, majuscules, and numerals. Beginning with markers, we will cover the range of implements used in this style calligraphy, such as dip pens, brushes, and fountain pens. No prior knowledge or handwriting abilities are necessary!

Students in this class will build on the floral painting skills they learned in the introductory workshop, starting with more complicated flowers and moving onto full page compositions. A general knowledge of how to use water color paints and some practice with variable pressure techniques is a good base for this class. All materials will be provided but feel free to supplement with your own supplies.

This intermediate level calligraphy course assumes prior knowledge of how to use a dip pen with a pointed nib, though students may also use a brush marker if preferred. Copperplate is a lovely, traditional hand that stems from English Roundhand and was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The contrast between elegant hairlines and gentle swells will take your calligraphy to a more formal level while preserving legibility. This hand-on class will use black or brown inks that may stain clothing.

This workshop is a follow up to the introductory course and students should be familiar with how to use a broad edged nib to create curved strokes. We will learn how to properly lay out a hand and examine the differences between Italic, Roman, and Gothic miniscules. A comparison of selected majuscules will follow.  Our goal will be to produce a simple quote on card stock.
