Quartet of Quilt and Textile Exhibits to be Featured at the Dunedin Fine Art Center this Summer

A Quartet of Quilt and Textile Exhibits Come to the Dunedin Fine Art Center
Nearly everyone remembers sleeping under a quilt made by their mother or grandmother, and many of those quilts were made from time-honored traditional quilt designs. Today’s quiltmakers take those designs as departure points for works that are often inspired by nature, personal or world events. June 9 through August 18, 2017, the Dunedin Fine Art Center (DFAC) is delighted to present three quilt exhibits and a textile exhibit that showcase the breadth of work being done with fabric today as well as a few added treats for all quilts and textile lovers. Primary local support for these exhibits is provided by Rainbow’s End Quilt Shoppe. Additional support comes from Syd & Irwin Entel, Chip & Gail Gamble, James & Karen Lehrburger, State of Florida- Division of Cultural Affairs, and the City of Dunedin.
“New Quilts from An Old Favorite: New York Beauty” is an exhibit of 18 finalists and winning quilts by quiltmakers responding to a challenge by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky to create original quilts based on the classic New York Beauty block pattern. Quilters modified New York Beauty block designs in imaginative ways, providing a wonderful look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today’s quiltmakers.
“SAQA Florida: Growth” runs concurrently in DFAC’s Douglas-Whitley and Meta B. Brown Galleries. Florida-based members of SAQA: Studio Art Quilt Associates share their fiber works created on the theme of: GROWTH. Artists were invited to consider the following terms when designing their entry: development, progress, advancement, expansion, improvement, cultivation, evolution, maturation, stretching, unfolding, elevation, transformation, divergence, vigor, vitality.
The third exhibit, “Slow Seeing: Erin E. Castellan” inhabits DFAC’s Gamble Family Gallery. The exhibit is an assembly of embroidered paintings on fabric and paper that capture the provocative vision of an artist marrying her studies in Textile Design and Painting.
In the John and Pat Rossi Gallery, SAQA fiber artist, Karol Kusmaul presents a joyful and distinctive ‘body’ of work—i.e. figures + portraits—composed of upcycled fabrics, she calls her glad rags.Shirt Tales: Portraits by Karol Kusmaul
Admission for these quilt & textile and MORE exhibits is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors $5 for students with ID. DFAC members and children under 12 are admitted FREE. Group rates for eight or more are available by calling DFAC.
