Lights… lights and….. well…. more lights has been the ongoing theme for the 30 years the Dunedin Fine Art Center has been mounting its festive holiday show and sale.
DFAC reconfigures itself November 5th, 2016 in its holiday finest… albeit with a decidedly artistic flair. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the invitational exhibition, this year appropriately entitled Joys to the World. On a yearly basis, DFAC curators look to put together the best art, with a gift-giving perspective in mind. The result is a collection of works from around the country that any of your friends or relatives would be DELIGHTED to find under their tree. Selected artists include: DFAC’s dynamic Faculty in all media plus new and returning superstars: Demeree Barth, Christine Renc-Carter, Van Der Luc, Lilly Florida, Denis Gaston, Jaclyn Head, Magda Gluszek, Susan Rollins Gehring, Barbara Grazul, Marjorie Greene, Myron Hansen, Polly Johnson, Jennifer Kosharek, Heather Leisch, Dacota Maphis, Kelsey Nagy, Calan Ree + Jim Morey of Crow + Lion Lamps, Vivian Ruegger and Deiderik Tamson.
Add to that some exceptionally decorated themed trees and a selection of hard-to-find gifts with something for just about everyone, and you begin to get the idea of what this much-anticipated holiday tradition is all about.
This year, curator Catherine Bergmann, making use of the newly increased gallery space available to her is mounting a concurrent exhibit. Synesthesia carries forth the sonic and music themes that DFAC featured in their Fall Exhibits.
With Synesthesia, sensory cross-pollination gives rise to the unexpected in a multi-disciplinary installation of contemporary artists who create visual music. Works by Trisha Brown, Elisabeth Condon, Kate Cummins, Kendra Frorup, David McKirdy, Leslie Neumann, Charles Parkhill and Josette Urso. among others.
Tradition has it, for Holiday Show and Sale exhibit only, that purchases can go home with you. See a painting you want… take it off the wall. Like those hand-made ornaments on that tree, grab them and take them to a cashier! DFAC’s holiday exhibit traditionally opens the same week as Art Harvest, the long-standing art fair hosted adjacent to the Dunedin Fine Art Center by the Junior League of Dunedin/Clearwater. This year, Synesthesia will open the same weekend. The sheer numbers involved make for a joyous yearly kick-off of the holiday season.
Recently, DFAC has been offering extended holiday hours. This year is no different, with the center being open for a full day on Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. DFAC’s Palm Cafe’ will ALSO be open Saturdays for the holiday season, so plan on staying for lunch! There will be special events and other offerings, so check the DFAC website at www.dfac.org for complete details. Joys to the World – 30th Annual Holiday show + Sale AND Synesthesia – both continue through December 23rd.
