Spirits Infuse a Quartet of Cultural Based Exhibits at the Dunedin Fine Art Center this Fall.
September 6th and 7th mark the birth of 4 new exhibits that reach across worldwide cultural boundaries . Spirited, enCircled, Saints Alive! and Kaleidescope of Culture will present an array of work gathered to reflect a broad, though singular theme.
Spirited, allows us to see another facet of the private collection of Dr. Robert and Chitranee Drapkin. Religious folk art from the 19th century to present day, reflect Guatemala’s ancient Mayan religion as influenced by centuries of superimposed Christianity introducing us to Maximon (San Simon), Ajits Judas, Rey Pascual and other saints of this living culture.
Mandalas as universal symbols of the sacred circle, can be found in all cultures dating back to the stone age. Created to define sacred space or as a tool to express, contain or regulate sacred energy, enCircled gathers contemporary artists whose imagery or creative process evoke that tradition. Works by Lisa Ariotti, Jack Casey, Catherine Colangelo, Don Cooper, Richard Entel, Dana Lynn Louis, David McKirdy, Bryan Gill Nash & Ivan Puig.
In the juried exhibition, Saints Alive!, artists present their private Saints, in all reverence (and not) via icons, illuminated pages, shrines, offerings and statuaries.
In Kaleidoscope of Cultures, the David L. Mason Children’s ART Museum casts its gaze over the multi-cultural landscape of earth, to visit cultural icons from around the globe. An exhibit of work from DFAC Summer Camp artists shares the same name, but occupies its own space in the Kokolakis Family Youth Gallery.
The two day extravaganza includes a Gallery Talk with collector Dr. Robert Drapkin Friday night, September 6th from 6-7 pm, with the opening reception for the exhibitions following immediately from 7-9 pm featuring refreshments and LIVE music. September 7th from 10 am – 2 pm is DFAC’s KID’S ART FEST. Games, Food and Music will be the menu of the day, as well as an 11 am award ceremony for the young Kaleidoscope of Cultures artists.
Admission is $5 Friday night September 6th (FREE to DFAC Members) and FREE for EVERYONE on Saturday, September 7th. Visit www.dfac.org or call 727.298.DFAC for more information.
