The Dunedin Fine Art Center (DFAC) invites art lovers and curious minds to the November edition of its popular Coffee & Conversation series, featuring renaissance artist Gary Greer. Sponsored by DFAC’s Sterling Society, this unique series offers the community a monthly opportunity to engage with inspiring artists over a warm cup of coffee.
Gary Greer’s artistic path defies categorization, with experience spanning invention sketches, commercial illustrations, abstract surrealism, watercolors, photography, digital art, and even animated music videos. His latest passion lies in sculpting, where he transforms palm tree elements into his distinctive Pod Sculptures, revealing nature’s textures and contours in artfully shaped, three-dimensional forms.
Greer’s creative journey began early, inspired by the imagination of Salvador Dalí and the precision of Norman Rockwell. After earning his BFA in design from the Kansas City Art Institute, he embarked on a career in industrial design and advertising, progressing from an illustrator in a Kansas City advertising agency to a fast-paced role in television graphics at KMBC.
Greer’s career took him from Kansas City to Tampa Bay, where he served as the creative lead for Paradyne Corporation, expanding his skill set to include photography and film. A continuous experimenter, he embraced digital art early on and recorded two albums, pairing his music with surreal animated videos that blend digital art and animation.
This upcoming Coffee & Conversation event will feature some of Greer’s animated music videos, along with a showcase of his latest sculptural work. Currently, he is also working on his first children’s book, Astronaut with the Red Umbrella, which he has both written and illustrated.
“My Pod Sculptures emerge from the essence of palm trees, with each piece carefully shaped and refined like wood,” says Greer. “The natural textures and contours of these pods are my canvas, and the music playing in my studio adds to my inspiration. Each sculpture is unique, with its design guided by the character of the pod itself.”
DFAC’s Coffee & Conversation with Gary Greer is a chance to hear directly from an artist whose multi-faceted career inspires awe and curiosity.
