This workshop, led by Scara Abe and Noriko Kuehn, delves into the Japanese art of sumi-e painting, highlighting the motif of “Shochikubai” (松竹梅)—the “Three Friends of Winter”: pine, bamboo, and plum blossom. These elements symbolize perseverance, resilience, and good fortune in Japanese culture.
Scara Abe, an artist deeply inspired by the beauty and mystique of Japan, bridges tradition and contemporary expression. Her work has been recognized globally, including being selected to represent Japan at the prestigious Louvre Museum in Paris. She has received numerous international accolades, from New York to France. In this workshop, Scara will teach her original sumi-e brush stroke techniques while wearing a traditional kimono, adding a cultural dimension to this immersive experience.

Tanner Sawitz, a ceramic artist known for his intricate porcelain creations, will lead this intensive workshop focusing on crystalline glazes and miniature wheel-thrown forms. Participants will glaze their own pieces using Tanner’s innovative techniques and learn to throw small-scale forms off the hump.
Tanner’s passion for ceramics began by watching his father teach the craft. He specializes in small-scale, crystalline-glazed pottery, with half of his work being functional and the other half non-functional. Tanner’s unconventional trimming videos have garnered him a significant following on Instagram, and his work is showcased in fine art shows and galleries across California. Looking ahead, Tanner is preparing to open a public pottery studio in Los Angeles in 2025.
Don’t Miss Out on These Inspiring Workshops!
These workshops offer a unique opportunity to expand your artistic skills under the guidance of highly celebrated artists. Whether you’re exploring Japanese sumi-e or mastering crystalline glazing, you’ll leave inspired and equipped with new techniques.
