Well that IS the life at least for an hour or so each month at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Coffee & Conversation series. Enjoy coffee (presented by the Sterling Society) and insights as each month’s invited guest holds forth on their own area of expertise. Admission to these relaxed talks is $5 and is FREE to current DFAC members.
Thursday, March 10th 2016 at 12 noon, the series hosts renowned glass artist Duncan McClellan. Duncan hardly needs any introduction Come ready to be inspired!
Duncan uses bold stylized icons depicting natural relationships that evoke emotional responses. His focus is centered on the internal graal technique and overlay techniques, incorporating hand cutting, photo resist and computer graphics. The overlay technique dates back to ancient Rome, though further developed to an elevated artistic level during the art noveau period of the early 1900s. This method fuses separate layers of clear and colored molten glass, as the artist expands and inverts multiple layers to create intricate designs. Once complete, the piece is annealed in an oven for up to 90 hours to relieve any structural stress in the glass.
To finish these works Duncan sand carves his rich iconography onto their surfaces. Acid etching, fire polishing and a six-stage grinding and polishing technique are also used. The rich coloration he uses in his glass and the voluptuous shapes he designs, invite closer inspection both inside and out. The result is an interactive relationship between the interior and exterior surfaces of the vessels. McClellan pours his lively expression of the nature of creativity into every piece.
Duncan McClellan’s fascination with glass began at age five, when he visited a glass factory in West Virginia. Duncan never forgot the image of the glowing, molten mass being formed by an expert craftsman. His distinctive work is in collections throughout the United States and abroad in both private and public collections including Raymond James Financial, Exxon, Ritz-Carlton, Bank of America, permanent museum collections, municipal collections and leading glass collectors.
