Stop into DFAC on weekday mornings to catch the pastel artist, working on a large-scale colorful Florida landscape. Feel free to ask questions or just watch.
While you’re there, check out the current exhibit of Students, Members, and Faculty works of art created at DFAC. Joyce, along with other award-winning DFAC instructors will have works on display in this exhibit.
Who is Shawn Dell Joyce?
In addition to teaching at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, Shawn Dell Joyce leads a series of plein air painting classes called “Plein Air Adventure” around Pinellas County, and teaches workshops in drawing and painting across the country. Previously, she founded and ran a nonprofit plein air school in New York for 20 years, based on the Hudson River School which still exists today. She teaches classes and workshops on plein air painting, the Hudson River School, and Transcendentalism around the country. Her work has been featured in magazines, museums, and galleries across the country, and has work in museums in NY and France.
About the Work in Progress
Art often happens behind closed doors, in silence and solitude. Joyce believes the process of artmaking is as important as the finished product. She has requested the opportunity to offer her students, friends and colleagues a chance to monitor her progress, ask questions and see techniques, and to make a time-lapse film of the process. The painting she is making is a pastel painting on a specially-built support 4’by 8’ that will feature a family of ibises in the surf at sunset. She will be using Mount Vision Pastels made locally in Tampa, and Ampersand Pastelbord. This project is made produced with the support of Creative Pinellas, Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater, and the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners.
