Neat, portable and inexpensive, colored pencils can be used for any style work, from rough sketches to finely detailed realism. Students experiment with color and techniques for a full range of special effects. Emphasis on developing an individual style through personal guidance from instructor and class discussion. Some background in drawing necessary. All new students receive a drawing pad and a special eraser.

Learn to draw anything by learning to see as an artist sees, with emphasis on the perception of contour, negative space, proportion and value. Excellent foundation for beginners, also sharpens experienced drawing skills. Improving your drawing skills is invaluable in all of your other creative pursuits. Based on “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards, this class develops your perceptual skills.

An atelier is an art school focused on teaching classical drawing techniques, and this class offers foundational skills in proportion, simplification, and value relationships. Beginners will work on master copies and sculpture casts, while intermediate students will focus on still-lives. The instructor provides personalized feedback and resources for continued learning. Beginners will have materials provided for a $30 fee, while intermediate students will bring their own supplies.

This class focuses on using a sketchbook or drawing pad to capture points of interest through observation, quick measurement, and loose lines. You’ll explore layout, design, and fine line illustration using graphite. Weaver Cottage and the Art Center offer beautiful settings for your sketches, which could evolve into finished graphite illustrations. You’ll also begin building a personalized sketchbook and incorporating sketching into your daily routine, with optional use of watercolor and pen and ink.

This workshop meets on Saturday and Sunday. Water soluble colored pencils combine the precision and control of pencil drawing with the fluid possibilities of watercolor paint. They’re especially useful for travelers and plein air artists, great for sketchbooks and journals. Come explore the many ways these versatile drawing tools can be used – wet or dry, alone or for mixed media. Derwent, leading makers and innovators in this fine art medium, will provide all the pencils for use in this class. (And you’ll get to keep some too!)

In this workshop, we use Zentangle® and other art methods. In a “No Mistakes” environment, we relax and focus on the art principle of Pattern (repeating elements in our compositions). For the beginner, this builds self-confidence, strengthens muscle-memory, and helps nurture individual style. For the non-beginner, this offers help for artist’s block and a “time-out” from the stress that often accompanies creativity. For everyone, it adds a new “palette” to be explored, employed, and enjoyed.  Age 17 and up. Instructor will provide all supplies.
