COLORED PENCIL SET — at least a 36 - 48 pencil set
Best brands: Prismacolor Premier; Derwent Artist, Studio or Coloursoft; Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor; Bruynzeel Design; Faber-Castell Polychromos; Caran d’Ache Pablo or Luminance; Blick Studio; Soho Urban Artist. (Not watercolor pencils. Avoid student grade or generic pencils) Prismacolors and some Derwent sets available at Office Depot or Staples, Michaels or JoAnn Fabric & Crafts – use coupons whenever possible! Better selection is available at The Art Supply Store, St. Pete; AOE Supply, Tampa, or by mail order (Blick Art Materials – dickblick.com; Jerry’s Artarama - jerrysartarama.com).
“PERFECTION 7058” INK ERASER (Provided in class for new students)
A typing/ink eraser that sharpens like a pencil.
GRAPHITE DRAWING PENCILS
H or HB (#2) lead or whatever you prefer
DRAWING PAPER (All new students receive a Stonehenge pad)
Most basic is a pad of vellum (not “smooth”) bristol paper, 9 x 12" or 11 x 14".
Other choices include colored Stonehenge, pastel papers such as Canson Mi-Tientes, UArt, Colourfix or cold-press illustration board. ( Plain sketchbook paper is not recommended for colored pencil; it’s OK for preliminary drawing.)
If buying electric, choose the kind with a spiral cutter, not a single blade. Office supply stores have their own brands and other choices.
MASKING TAPE or clear tape
DRAWING BOARD for support
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES (nice to have but NOT necessary):
Colorless blender pencils: Derwent, Prismacolor Colorless Blender or Lyra "Splender" blender
X-Acto knife (or similar small craft knife)
colorless blender markers (made by Prismacolor and others)
popsicle stick and/or golf tee (yes, really!)
chamois (a piece about 6" square)
various other erasers
graphite transfer paper
blending stump (pointed blending tool made of tightly rolled paper)
workable fixative ( recommended to prevent “bloom” on finished work)
some students bring a table easel for proper viewing angle. (Floor easels are available in studio)
