Richard McKinley Supply List

TEXTBOOK: Pastel Pointers: Top 100 Secrets for Beautiful Pastel Paintings , North Light Books. Richard’s book will be frequently referenced throughout the workshop. This will be used as a textbook in lieu of handouts.

REFERENCE MATERIAL: Photographic landscape material, or small field paintings will be needed for reference when not working en plein air, outside. Have an assortment to choose from. Note: Some participants prefer to use images on an iPad or similar digital tablet.

Pastel Supply List

PASTELS: Prepare full size pastel sticks for painting by removing labels and breaking sticks in half. Arrange them by color family and value . GIRAULT, TERRY LUDWIG, GREAT AMERICAN

ARTWORKS, SCHMINCKE, SENNELIER, UNISON, and MOUNT VISION are good for softer applications. REMBRANDT, CRETACOLOR, and CARAN D’ACHE are good for harder applications. For convenience, two selections of 50Girault pastels each are available as:Neutrals & Friends and Plein Air Addition by Richard McKinley. A selection of 60 Terry Ludwig pastels is available as: McKinley Workshop assortment and a selection of 72 Great American Artworks pastels is available as: Richard McKinley’s Landscape Palette. A few miscellaneous pastels that will be very useful are: Nu-Pastel, 244-P (Blue-Violet) and 298-P (Bottle-Green); Cretacolor, 140 (Mars-Violet) and 239 (Payne’s-Grey); Rembrandt brand, 548.3 (Blue-Violet).

Richard’s pastel palette is a briefcase style box with lids for transport. He recommends:

PASTEL SURFACES: Pastel Premier White Fine or Extra Fine grit paper, UArt 400 or 320 grit paper (Pastel Premier and UArt papers must be mounted to archival ridged boards in advance of water based underpainting techniques),Ampersand Pastelbord (white),Multimedia Pastel Panels, or Homemade Grit Surfaces (information on preparing homemade surfaces is covered in the Pastel Pointers Book). Sizes ranging from 9x12 to 12x16 are recommended (larger paintings are permissible).

Field-study-paintings will be demonstrated during the workshop using Pastel Premier Italian Clay paper in sizes ranging from 6x8 to 9x12.

Packets of pre-mounted Pastel Premier and UArt paper, as well as Multimedia Pastel Panels and various other surfaces, are available from: Central Art Supply 1-800-863-1444, Medford, OR.

PASTEL GRIT: A small container ofLiquitex Clear Gesso, Art Spectrum Clear Pastel Primer, or Golden Acrylic Ground for Pastel.

SUPPORT: A smooth surface like GATOR-BOARD works well. Make sure your support is large enough to allow for a few inches of border all around your pastel surface. Gator-Board is available in white or black. Sheets of tracing paper or glassine may be used to protect the pastel painting surfaces for transport.

EASEL: An adequate field easel and pastel palette support will be needed. A folding Table and folding A-frame easel are fine. Richard uses a Camera Tripod Field Easel setup utilizing a Heilman easel attachment mounted to the tripod’s camera quick-release bracket with Heilman’s accessory plate (both available from Heilman Designs: 530-778-3080 www.heilmandesigns.com). The pastel palette is attached to the tripod with an Easel Butler (www.easelbutler.com). This is a good lightweight support arm system that fits onto an A-frame easel or camera tripod.

* An umbrella for shading your palette is advisable. There are models available that attach to some easels, check with the individual manufactures. Artwork Essentials and Best Brella (www.bestbrella.com) have good models.

UNDERPAINTING: A palette of assorted watercolors and oil/acrylic synthetic bristle brushes in flats will be used for underpainting techniques. Have a few colors from each of the basic color families such as: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Turquoise Blue, Sap Green, Payne’s Gray, and Burnt Sienna. These are only recommendations and substitutions are fine. Prepare a moderate sized watercolor palette in advance.

MISC.: Neutral colored Drafting Tape to attach paper to backing board, Black ph balanced Masking Tape, Sketchbook-Notebook, 3 Tombow ABT markers N15-N55-N75 (or other comparable brand), 2b or HB Pencils, Pencil Sharpener, Odorless Mineral Spirits, Denatured or Rubbing Alcohol, Viva Paper Towels, Digital Camera. Students are encouraged to bring a few photos of their recent work for review. For the final critique, originals or reproductions are welcome.
