Refresh the fundamentals or learn from scratch! In this introductory metalsmithing class, you'll learn the fundamental skills of metal jewelry fabrication. Learn good studio habits while learning how to solder with a gas torch, sawing, filing, using the flex-shaft, riveting techniques, finish work and other common bench and studio necessities. All students will be following the same curriculum.

You'll complete unique jewelry projects in copper, brass and sterling silver while learning the proper techniques necessary to build a solid foundation in the metal jewelry arts. This is a limited entry class, so sign up early to ensure your spot. Ages 17 and up.

A $120 fee will be paid to the instructor for the metals and supplies used in class.

This class builds on the skills learned in Fundamentals of Jewelry Fabrication I. In addition, you will learn how to create a bezel and basic stone setting along with lots of demonstrations and hands-on work. You'll create beautiful pieces of jewelry while expanding and building your metalsmithing skills. All students will be following the same curriculum. Ages 17 and up.
A fee of $120 will be paid to the instructor to cover the cost of metals used in class.

This is a guided independent studies class for the intermediate to advanced metalsmith student. Bring in your jewelry projects or start something new! We'll troubleshoot both design and technique challenges and critique designs both one-on-one and as a group. This class is loaded with great bench tips and technical demonstrations to guide students through projects with success.

Bring your own materials or you may purchase materials from the instructor. A $15 materials fee, payable to the instructor, helps to defray the cost of miscellaneous supplies. Ages 17 and up.

Basic metal fabrication skills are a must! This class builds on the skills learned in the introductory Fundamentals of Jewelry Fabrication I and II classes or equivalent and is appropriate for advanced beginner to intermediate metalsmiths. This is a limited entry class, so sign up early to ensure your spot. Ages 17 and up.

The finish on a piece of jewelry can make all the difference between breathtaking and so-so. Learn the steps of metal finishing and surface textures such as mirror polish, satin, tumbled, texture brushed, solder removal, etc. Discover ways to get different finishes using the flex-shaft, tumbler, buffer or by hand. Learn the different buffs, abrasives, brushes, tricks and techniques to achieve your perfect finish.
A $20 material fee is paid directly to the instructor. Ages 17 and up.

All That Glitters! An Introduction to Keum Boo and Aura22 W-JW265

This is a weekend workshop meeting on Saturday and Sunday.
Add the beauty of gold to your sterling silver jewelry with 24 karat gold! Students will be introduced to the Korean art of Keum-boo - an ancient gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of precious metal to silver and other metals. Aura22 - a 22 karat yellow gold "paint" will also be demonstrated. Traditional and unconventional methods of Keum-boo application and the advantages/disadvantages of each will be discussed to help the student find the application technique that serves them best. Learn how to achieve a dark patina on silver to make the gold pop! Students will create a pair of earrings or a pendant of Sterling silver embellished with 24 karat gold using the Keum-boo technique. Add the richness of gold to your jewelry designs with minimal expense!
Students must be comfortable with a torch. Ages 17 and up.
A materials fee of $125 is paid directly to the instructor (average depending upon the metals market at the time of the workshop).

Spinner Ring Basics - A Soldered Fabrication Project W-JW267

In this fast-paced workshop, you'll create and finish one Spinner-style ring! Simple or elaborate; you may feature one spinner or a few! For the more advanced student, you may wish to set a stone or two on your spinners. A selection will be available or you may bring your own tiny cabochons.
Simple ring or band making incorporates a good number of basic jewelry fabrication skills such as sawing, fitting joints, filing, shaping, texturing, soldering and of course finishing and polishing. A perfect beginner project, but good for those with more experience too!
A $55 materials fee is paid directly to the instructor.

Spiralclover Necklace - A Wire Project - Cold Connected W-JW268

Using only basic wire skills, you can finish this complex-looking but simple necklace in only a day! You have a choice of creating your masterpiece from copper as shown or Sterling silver. In this one-day workshop, you'll learn to make beautiful spirals with simple hand tools and the tricks for creating consistent and matching components in wire. You'll also be introduced to 2-in-2 chainmaille and how to create your own unique clasp! Some basic wire jewelry know-how is recommended, but not necessary. Ages 17 and up.
A $30 materials fee is paid to the instructor for copper, $95 Sterling silver.
