Neat, portable and inexpensive, colored pencils can be used for any style work, from rough sketches to finely detailed realism. Students experiment with color and techniques for a full range of special effects. Emphasis on developing an individual style through personal guidance from instructor and class discussion. Some background in drawing necessary. All new students receive a drawing pad and a special eraser.

Arm yourself with the secret weapons of colored pencil! This class is a thorough introduction for beginners and a skill-builder for experienced “CP” artists. You will master techniques that produce beautiful results and speed up your working time. As you apply these techniques on your own choice of projects, you’ll learn seeing skills that improve your drawing ability. Discussion will include comparison of various pencil brands and surfaces and accurate color mixing. Supplies provided include erasers and surprise tools, assorted papers, color and outline reference images for exercises and practice projects. Pencil sets will be available for use in class for those who do not bring their own.

They’re especially useful for travelers and plein air artists, great for sketchbooks and journals. Come explore the many ways these versatile drawing tools can be used—wet or dry, alone or for mixed media. Derwent, leading makers and innovators in this fine art medium, will provide all the pencils for use in this class. (And you’ll get to keep some too!)

The instructor is a Registered Teacher in the Michael Wilcox (author of Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green) School of Color. The Wilcox method saves money on paint and time in finding the color you need! Features introduction to color theory, video presentation and hands on exercises. Discussion will also include lightfastness, color schemes, and literal/interpretive use of color. Color theory applies to all color media. No matter your medium, this class will help you understand how to mix to get the right color with less trial and error.
You will provide your own choice of color media (acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor or colored pencil). A packet of additional supplies from the School of Color will be available for purchase before the class begins. Details will be provided at registration.
