Skill Levels: Intermediate,Advanced

Introduction to basic and safe methods of etching with a non-acid solution (ferric chloride) using copper plates. Printmaking experience is not necessary but having taken a drawing class or have some basic drawing ability is required. Those with etching experience can expand on more advanced techniques or try mezzotints. The use of a large and small etching press, aquatint box and other equipment will be covered. Ages 17 and up.

Note: Your first 4”x6” plate is provided in your material fee — please register early so we can order the necessary plates. Additional plates will be available for sale from DFAC. We'll discuss technique, paper, ink and ink modifiers in depth. We use oil based inks and minimal amounts of odorless mineral spirits in our cleanup for those with a sensitivity. Most of our cleanup is done with vegetable oil and Simple Green. Disposable gloves for handling ink are available and dust masks for handling rosin are available and required.
