We will have fun in this cooking class with kid-friendly recipes that teach students the basics of cooking. An emphasis on safety and cleanliness in the kitchen will be taught. Each class we will make two recipes, some simple, some more complex. A $10 fee is to be paid in the first class to the instructor for the cost of the food. Be sure to let the instructor know if you have any food allergy concerns. Ages 6 - 12 yrs

Teens and their 35mm cameras will use the darkroom to develop the art within themselves. Students will learn about the photographic process by capturing just the right shot, processing film/photos, and adding color to their prints through different processes to create something very cool from an originally black and white photo. Note: See Schedules for more time slots on Mondays. 6 Individual 50 minute sessions employing therapeutic art techniques catered to the client and their needs. Great for children with mental, social and physical disabilities such as, but not limited to, ADD/ADHD, ODD, Autism spectrum disorders and learning disabilities. Art encourages creativity, reduces stress, improves self-esteem, and can increase awareness as well as help with symptoms of trauma. Art is an abstract form of communication that allows individuals to express their feelings and emotions non verbally. Art is used to improve hand eye coordination, spatial reasoning, concentration and attention to detail. Sessions can be a great addition to current therapies or as a chance to relax and explore emotions through the creative process. Jennifer Klaus received a B.F.A. in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design. She has been teaching 9 years at DFAC in the children/teen art classes/camps. Jennifer has a BA in Psychology and a Master's in Clinical Research/Social Work. She is a LCSW who has worked with children of all ages and their families in individual, family and group sessions, particularly those with behavior, learning and developmental disorders. Jennifer worked with Calvin A. Hunsinger and Paul B. Stephens (both Pinellas county center schools), an inpatient SIPP program for adolescents, an outpatient trauma and behavioral program for children and their families.

This drawing class aims to give guidance on drawing basics like sketching, gesture drawing, still life, perspective, and figure drawing to develop the students’ skills at everyone’s level. This class also serves as an open studio where students may practice what they want to draw and receive help as needed. We will work to train the eye to learn how to “really see” using blind contour drawing as a technique to improve drawing skills. Students will create a final piece of their own subject matter by using a combination of props, fellow classmates, and models. Materials suggested are an 18 x 24 newsprint/sketch pad, 18 x 24 drawing paper (70 lb.), pencils 2B and 4B, ebony pencil, blending tortillons, pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, soft vine charcoal, and any other tools you prefer. Note: Materials not supplied. For new and continuing students, ages 11 & up.

Students will learn different techniques using paints, inks, sprays, stencils, drawing, and other fun things showing their own style in their own journal. Each week we will explore different techniques that the students will then customize their pages. Ideas and feelings can then be expressed creatively. Students need to bring their own multi use paper journal that will take wet medium. They can bring their own markers, pencils, scissors etc if they do not wish to share what the teacher has. As with all DFAC classes, sanitizing of shared materials and the room will be done as well as social distancing. Students need to bring journal of choice. Ages 11 - 17

This class will focus on creating your own personal sketchbook/journal to use as a creative place to explore your creative process and to instill a practice of creative self-care. We will use a variety of mediums to work in our sketchbooks from drawing, painting, collage, black out poetry, etc. to give different opportunities for expression. We will discuss and explore any technique or medium to work on together or individually. This will also serve as an open studio and safe place so students may practice what they want to draw and receive help as needed. Materials suggested: at least 8” x 10” sketchbook or used book or larger size, favorite magazines/imagery to cut up, preferred drawing tools like markers, pens, pencils etc., any other found materials that could be put into a sketchbook. Note: Some materials like glue, tape, paint, and other drawing materials will be supplied. For new and continuing students, ages 11 & up

Each class meeting will have a specific theme. They are: 1. Superhero 2. Robot 3. Dragon 4. Starwars 5. Animal 6. Drawing to music. Ideally a large drawing pad and ebony pencil but you can use what you have available. In Person attendance will have multiple choices of subject matter whereas Zoom attendees will have one option due to camera feed.
