Great for children with mental, social and physical disabilities such as, but not limited to, ADD/ADHD, ODD, Autism spectrum disorders and learning disabilities. Art encourages creativity, reduces stress, improves self-esteem, and can increase awareness as well as help with symptoms of trauma. Art is an abstract form of communication that allows individuals to express their feelings and emotions non verbally. Art is used to improve hand eye coordination, spatial reasoning, concentration and attention to detail. Sessions can be a great addition to current therapies or as a chance to relax and explore emotions through the creative process. Jennifer Klaus received a B.F.A. in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design. She has been teaching 9 years at DFAC in the children/teen art classes/camps. Jennifer has a BA in Psychology and a Master's in Clinical Research/Social Work. She is a LCSW who has worked with children of all ages and their families in individual, family and group sessions, particularly those with behavior, learning and developmental disorders. Jennifer worked with Calvin A. Hunsinger and Paul B. Stephens (both Pinellas county center schools), an inpatient SIPP program for adolescents, an outpatient trauma and behavioral program for children and their families.

This drawing class aims to give guidance on drawing basics like sketching, gesture drawing, still life, perspective, and figure drawing to develop the students’ skills at everyone’s level. This class also serves as an open studio where students may practice what they want to draw and receive help as needed. We will work to train the eye to learn how to “really see” using blind contour drawing as a technique to improve drawing skills. Students will create a final piece of their own subject matter by using a combination of props, fellow classmates, and models. Materials suggested are an 18 x 24 newsprint/sketch pad, 18 x 24 drawing paper (70 lb.), pencils 2B and 4B, ebony pencil, blending tortillons, pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, soft vine charcoal, and any other tools you prefer. Note: Materials not supplied. For new and continuing students, ages 11 & up.

Like to draw Japanese characters like Manga and even some from a popular hunting/collecting games? Come hang out in this "club-like" class and draw in your favorite journal, taking one of the drawings, cut it out or enlarge it and mount it on a larger painted background, or create stories in your journal/sketchbook. The teacher will have props to help you with this project. Students need to bring journal of choice and are welcome to bring favorite props as well. Ages 9 - 17

Come out and learn the basics while drawing cool stuff like animals, armor, dragons, robots, skulls, starwars props, etc. The focus and challenge will be to capture 3 dimensional objects onto a two dimensional surface. Skills will be developed at each individual’s level. Materials Suggested are 18 x 24 sketch pad, 9 x 12 sketch pad, ebony pencils, soft pencils HB, 2B, 4B, pencil sharpener, pink eraser, kneaded eraser, #5 soft vine charcoal and any other tools you prefer. This class will focus on creating your own personal sketchbook/journal to use as a creative place to explore your creative process and to instill a practice of creative self-care. We will use a variety of mediums to work in our sketchbooks from drawing, painting, collage, black out poetry, etc. to give different opportunities for expression. We will discuss and explore any technique or medium to work on together or individually. This will also serve as an open studio and safe place so students may practice what they want to draw and receive help as needed. Materials suggested: at least 8” x 10” sketchbook or used book or larger size, favorite magazines/imagery to cut up, preferred drawing tools like markers, pens, pencils etc., any other found materials that could be put into a sketchbook. Note: Some materials like glue, tape, paint, and other drawing materials will be supplied. For new and continuing students, ages 11 & up

Join Chef Debbie McGiffin for these one day, hands-on cooking workshops for teens. We will learn the basics of cutlery, how to read and understand a recipe and the practical art of 'Mise en Place' as well as a variety of cooking techniques. In person or Log in and Zoom out with Mr Todd and his 4 week drawing class. We will be holding a socially distanced drawing class here at DFAC with easels spaced 6 ft apart with themed related still lifes. If you opt to zoom, you will receive a link the day before class starts. Each class meeting will have a specific theme. They are: 1. Steampunk 2. Gothic 3. Superheroes 4. Starwars/General Grievous bust. Ideally a large drawing pad and ebony pencil but you can use what you have available. In Person attendance will have multiple choices of subject matter whereas Zoom attendees will have one option due to camera feed. Demonstrations at start of classes followed by regular rounds of live feedback for both in person and zoom students.
