Are you looking for something new exciting to do this summer? Why not spend some time developing your artistic skills and honing your creativity in one of the many classes offered at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Gladys Douglas School for the Arts? Explore a range of mediums and styles for all levels of experience, in any of our stress-free courses taught by some of the area’s most respected instructors. Here’s a look at a few classes being offered this summer:
1. Clay Exploration
If you’ve been wanting to get your hands on the fun and versatile medium of clay, this hand building clay class is the place to do it. Students will learn the basics of extrusion, slab, coil and modular clay construction and those with prior clay working experience will have freedom to further their skills in making conceptual, decorative or functional art.
2. Beginning Welding and Metalworking
In this workshop for all levels, students will learn hands-on metalworking techniques as they work on individual projects they design with the help of their instructor. Demonstrations include how to cut metal using a cut off wheel and shear, and the use of various bending techniques including slip roller, brake and torch bending. Workshop Instructor Dominice Gilbert has an extensive educational and professional background in wood and metal work and will provide individualized guidance along the way. Students must be 16 or older and should come prepared with safety glasses, leather gloves, long pants, cotton shirts and closed toe shoes. All other tools and materials included.
3. Real Jewelry/Real Easy
From beginners to advanced jewelry makers, students with all levels of experience will enjoy this fun, creativity-inspiring class. The instructor will teach beginning students the skills needed to create beautiful sterling silver jewelry with semiprecious stones using a torch and basic tools, while advanced students will be encouraged to explore their approach. Those with experience will be introduced to more complex methods of construction and embellishments through a series of projects designed to develop their skills.
4. Colored Pencil for Everyone
Neat, portable and inexpensive, colored pencils can be used for any style work, from rough sketches to finely detailed realism. They’re also very easy to learn! Students in this class will experiment with color and techniques for a full range of special effects. Some background in drawing is necessary, as this class places emphasis on developing an individual style.
5. Dancing With YUPO and Rocking With TERRASKIN
Prepare to explore the word of tree-free synthetic paper and get energized and ready to tickle your creative juices. In this class, instructor Taylor Ikin, known as the “YUPO Queen,” will introduce students to a new painting surface, Terraskin, which is made from stone. Enjoy individual attentions, motivational readings and engaging art discussions coupled with a cheerful environment and positive spirit. In this class, everyone is considered a winner.
